The heir apparent to the University of Colorado football empire led by head coach Deion Sanders was always Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter. Now it’s official, Coach Sanders has named Salter his week 1 starter over five-star true freshman Julian Lewis.

Lewis was one of the more sought after recruits ever. So much so that he accelerated his high school career, moving from the class of 2026 to the class of 2025. In both classes he was ranked the best player in the nation. He is still only 17 years old, and likely if he had any experience at the college level, this could have been an actual battle.

It is a tale of two football journeys on this year’s Buffaloes depth chart at quarterback. Salter has a world of experience, having been at Liberty for four seasons and amassing over 5,000 yards and 80 touchdowns.
Salter will have big shoes to fill, as he is replacing the son of his head coach in the most important position in sports. Shedeur Sanders was his father’s starting quarterback since 2021; he is now competing to be the starter on the Cleveland Browns. The relationship between Salter and Coach Sanders will be interesting to monitor, as he has never coached a full season where his son is not the starting quarterback.

The night and day difference in experience is likely what earned Salter the job over Lewis. He also left Liberty to play his final season for Colorado, if they bothered to bring him in, they were planning on making him their gig for 2025.

Lewis will certainly get some action this season as well. Whether that is when a game is well in hand, or production is lacking, time will tell.
New starter Kaidon Salter, Coach Prime, and the Colorado Buffaloes open their season at home on August 29th at 8pm against Georgia Tech.
